Subject: CAP Safety Officer Course - how to enroll
Group Safety Officers:
This is a reminder that every safety officer (at all levels - squadron, group and wing) must take the AFIADL "CAP Safety Officer" Course. The regulation requires the course be taken within 90 days of being appointed as a safety officer. We have too many safety officers who have not met this requirement.
As you know, part of the group safety officer's job is to visit every squadron in the group at least once or twice a year. As you visit squadrons in your group, please make sure all the squadron commanders and safety officers know that the safety officer needs to complete this course. It is not time consuming or particularly challenging.
The enrollment process in AFIADL correspondence courses is described in CAPR
50-17 chapter 8, but the process for enrolling has changed since that regulation was published. Below you will find detailed instructions in how to enroll - please forward them to all safety officers in your group. Thanks to Capt Shane Lipson who researched and prepared these instructions.
Thank you,
Malcolm Dickinson
Director of Safety, New York Wing

See also: http://level2.cap.gov/index.cfm?nodeID=5895
The enrollment process is similar to what is on the web page
http://www.cap.gov/visitors/members/professional_development/index.cfm?nodeID=6682&audienceID=41. Go to
http://www.maxwell.af.mil/au/afiadl and click on "Student Information" on the left side menu.2. You can use either the AU 23 (pdf) or the AU IMT 23.
The AU 23 is better because it is a PDF, so you don't have to download special software to read it.3. Type in all information as requested.
Course number is 02710 | |
Be sure to put your HOME address - that will get the books mailed directly to your home. | |
The new "TCF shred code" for everyone in NY Wing is 1060412182 (this gets your test mailed to the new wing HQ in White Plains) |
4. EMAIL the AU 23 to the address listed on the form. You should get an email reply confirmation that it is "in process."
5. Your book will be mailed to your home - expect it in 1 to 2 weeks.
6. Immediately upon receiving your book, you should request the exam. The instructions to request the exam come with your book; basically, you go to the exact same web page, but this time fill out a form AU-17 "To Ask a Question".... one of the questions you can ask is "please send me the exam."
7. Your test will be mailed to Wing HQ; the wing Professional Development Officer will forward it to your group or squadron. The entire forwarding process can take 5 weeks or more, which is why it's important to request the test as soon as you receive the materials. In the meantime, read the book and take any practice tests that it contains.
8. The group or squadron testing officer should notify you when they receive your test. Make an appointment with your testing officer to take the multiple-choice test. He/she will mail the answer sheet to AFIADL in the supplied envelope. A couple weeks later, you will receive a postcard with the results of your test.
9. When you have passed the test, please notify your group safety officer via email, and indicate so on your next quarterly report. You have now completed one of the requirements for the Technician Rating in Safety. (For the rest of the requirements, see CAP Pamphlet 217.
